Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, style, and food. Hope you have a nice stay!

The City Of Brotherly Love!

The City Of Brotherly Love!

Philadelphia has been always been a place that I wanted to visit. Back in December Expedia had a flash sale offering $100 off any domestic flight making the round trip ticket only $197. With United Basic Economy you have the option to select your seat for an additional $10 each way. Basic Economy does not allow you to bring a carry on bag, but you are allowed one personal item which can be a standard backpack as long as it fits under the seat. Checked bags are $30 each way.

We stayed at Courtyard by Marriott Philadelphia City Avenue which is centrally located for all of the tourist attractions. Although the hotel does not offer complimentary airport shuttle services, they do offer transport each hour that will take you to any of the tourist sites. The best part about the 4 star hotel was that it was FREE!!. Marriot as well as a lot of other chain hotels offer reward points that you can earn points with each hotel stay and redeem the points later for free nights. Marriot Bonvoy credit cards are cards that you can earn points by making regular purchases. The best way to earn points is to pay all of your bills on credit cards that offer cash rewards or points, then turn around and travel the world for free or little to nothing using the points.

Day 1: Our flight arrived at 4 pm After we checked into the hotel we made sure Country Cooking was our first stop. I have been following Saudia for months, I just love her energy and you can tell she puts her all in her business. The wait time was about 45 minutes and worth every second! There restaurant is small, but there are a few tables set up outside. Country Cookin is located at 2836 N. 22nd St. Philadelphia, PA 19132 Pictured: Cuban Turkey Necks over rice, Yams, and Mac N’ Cheese - $15.50

Day 2: Because it was a high percentage of rain, we decided to do all of our indoor activities. We purchased the Philadelphia City Pass that included 3 attractions for $49. We selected the One Liberty Observation Deck, Eastern State Penitentiary, and the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour with our pass. The first stop of the day was the One Liberty Observation Deck.

What better way to see Philadelphia than to see it from 57 floors up? As a person who is terrified of heights, it wasn’t as scary as it looks. Included in your ticket is a guided tour available every hour that will give you more history and also point out some of the monuments from far up.

After asking several Philadelphians where to get the best cheesesteak they all recommended Max’s. We arrived around 12 pm for lunch and luckily there was a short line. Everyone was so friendly and it didn't take long for our cheesesteak to come out. I would recommend if you decide to go to stop by a corner store to get a drink. Max’s only had beer options and a random grape juice in the back. Make sure you order it “Homie Style”, still not sure what that is but all of the locals were ordering it. Max’s is cash only.

Chicken Cheesesteak half size - $8.50. A whole cheesesteak is $18 which could feed at least 3-4 people. It was good, but the best in Philly I’m not sure about all that…. Max’s is located at 3653 Germantown Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19140

Next stop was the African American Museum. We purchased the tickets on Groupon for only $9 which included entry for two. The museum is only 4 floors and it you stop to read everything, you can see the entire museum in under 90 minutes.

The Eastern State Penitentiary was the first penitentiary in the U.S.. The tour is audio guided, all you have to do is enter the number at each spot to hear the history. The entire tour takes about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to finish if you listen entirely and stop at each spot. The location is supposedly haunted, but I didn't get that feeling.

I’m not a basketball fan, but since we didn’t have anything planned we decided to go to the 76ers home game against the Kings. These great seats were only $125 each.

For dinner we went to Jordan Johnson Gourmet Seafood. Everything was delicious and the service was amazing. It was only a 20 minute wait when we arrived. Pictures is the Collard Green Egg Roll which is the #1 item on the menu for only $8

Day 3: We spent the majority of the day using our city pass on the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour. The entire tour is roughly 90 mins with 27 different stops. I really enjoyed the fact that we could hop off at any stop, walk around and wait for the next bus to come when you are done. It took about 30 minutes for the next bus. I would honestly recommend this tour for anyone who plans on going to all of the tourist attractions because it saves on Uber and/or having to find parking. The stops include Reading Terminal, all of the museums, and the famous '“Rocky Steps”. Since I am a true foodie of course Reading Terminal was my favorite stop. When you go make sure you go on a empty stomach. It was like entering food heaven. Most of the restaurants offered samples. We decided to eat at Beck’s Cajun Café. Pictured is Fried Mac & Chees with Bacon, $4.75.

Also at Beck’s I tried the “Trainwreck” which has steak, salami, andouille sausage, cheese and onions; Only $10.95. Not pictured is the classic banana pudding from Sweet Nina’s the banana pudding was sooo good, I didn't even have time to take a picture.

I couldn't leave Philly without stopping at the world famous Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Café located on the historic South street. The wait time was about 30 minutes, which was not bad for a Saturday night. The food was amazing!! Pictured is the Lollipop Lamb Chops with Sweet Chili Sauce. The sides are the southern collard greens with smoked turkey and candied yams with melted marshmallow topping, $32.00

Lastly, my least favorite dish the entire trip was the appetizer Shrimp & Grits, $10. I was thrown off when it first came out because of the shredded cheese. The shrimp was good, but the grits were disgusting. This is definitely a dish I would not try again.
